Computer Software

Software is the lifeblood of your computer. It is the collection of programs that make it work. The quality of your software and how well it is installed and maintained have more impact on the effectiveness of your computer than the quality of the hardware. Today there is an enormous amount of software available tailored for every business and situation but most people struggle by trying to make the one piece of software they understand fit every problem. I have seen secretaries trying to keep accounts with MS Word and Accountants trying to maintain text databases with Excel.

Google Bar
This is a very useful little tool which is available free from Google. It adds a Google Search tool bar to the Internet Explorer Toolbar.

AntiVirus Software

It is an absolutely essential requirement that you use good antivirus software and keep it current. This means that eventually you will end up paying an annual subscription fee but this is generally a quite small charge which should be viewed as an essential minor overhead of modern business life. I have never found any need to go beyond Symantec Norton Anti Virus or McAfee.
But whichever one you use; it will quickly become useless unless you turn on the automatic update feature and update the virus definitions at least once a week.

Popular accounting packages are getting like word processing software; they now contain far too many features that aren't used. Worse still, to accommodate these new features you are constantly being forced into new releases only to find that each time the user interface has been changed and you have to learn everything all over again.
For many small businesses, the more popular packages are overkill and what they really need is a good local cashbook system. We have now found such a system and convinced that it is the best around have negotiated a special deal for our clients.
